Investigate the influence of social media on contemporary culture and social interactions.

 

Begin by listing the 5 components of culture I outline in the mini lecture this week.

 

Give me one or two sentences explaining each of these components.

 

Next, explore the ways in which platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok shape your self-presentation and your social relationships.

 

Give me three examples each for one of the listed platforms.

 

This part should be in first person as I am asking you to talk about your experiences.

 

Talk me through the implications of social media use for identity construction, privacy, and the formation of online communities.

Definitions needed:

Self-presentation: Self-presentation refers to the intentional and strategic efforts made by individuals to shape how they are perceived by others. It involves the conscious management of one’s behavior, appearance, and communication in social interactions.

1. Social relationships: Social relationships refer to the connections and interactions individuals have with others within a social context. These relationships are characterized by patterns of social interaction, communication, and interdependence.
2. Identity construction: Identity construction refers to the process through which individuals develop and define their sense of self, including their social, cultural, and personal identities.

• Privacy: Privacy refers to the right and expectation individuals have to control access to their personal information, spaces, and experiences. It encompasses the ability to limit unwanted intrusion, maintain personal boundaries, and safeguard personal autonomy.

Socialization

Hint: for either of these questions, you will use the agents of socialization listed in the lecture notes and the mini lecture on this topic. Artificial Intelligence (ChatGPT for example) doesn’t get them right because sociology uses different agents than other disciplines.

• Choose two societalevents that have had influence over your socialization (Ex. The Great Depression in the 1930s, Vietnam War, 9/11, the COVID-19 Pandemic, etc.)? What are they? These need to be public issues not personal troubles. (Your parents’ divorce might have influenced your socialization quite a bit, but I want you to think sociologically here which means seeing beyond your personal experiences.) Think about how socialization is ongoing. That is, how will these events continue to impact your future socialization? How have these two events impacted the agents of socialization as they pertain to you? Go through all six of them here.
